Have mercy on your lathe! Conventional, fixed axle tools set up almost unbearable strains on the spindle bearings of a light lathe. Moreover, the finished knurl produced in this way is seldom satisfactory.
Neither of the following designs create these strains; allowing the two knurls to 'float' on the work. Each employs two sturdy cheek plates which steady the arms enormously when traversing the work.
Each design accept straight or diamond knurls which can be ordered separately and can quickly be changed from one pattern to the other.
Basic Knurling Tool

The Basic Knurling Tool is a sound investment; from its first use you'll wonder why you put up with anything less?
The tool has a capacity of Ø3/16 - Ø2" and the thin knurls can be traversed to within a 1/4" of the chuck. A single pass will suffice in all but the toughest steels.
The kit includes all necessary material together with drawings and construction notes.

Sensitive Knurling Tool

This design closely follows that of the 'Marlco' brand, available from W H Marley & Co until the late 60's. This item became a standard in the toolroom; allowing operators to feel the knurl being generated and adjust the pressure to both arms using fine feed lever. This is a great advantage for jobs in aluminium and brass where care must be taken not to tear the material. It is also child's-play to run knurls of identical depth on a quantity of parts.
The proportions of the original tool have been reduced to a size more suitable to the lighter lathe and the capacity ranges from Ø3/16" to Ø2 1/2". The kit arrives with all necessary materials, drawings and construction notes. Whilst this project contains more work than the basic knurling tool, we have no doubt that you will be repaid handsomely!

Diamond Pattern Fine Knurl Pair

A left and right handed spiral knurl pair - producing a fine diamond pattern (Pitch = 0.029") . Provides a comfortable and elegant grip for many jobs.
Hobbed and hardened in HSS, these British made knurls have honed bores.

Straight pattern knurl pair - producing a pitch of 0.025". Ideal for tool making applications and a close match to those used by many manufacturers of lathes and millers.
